Alright my fine feathered friends— I've got a real doozy for you guys today. But before I get into it, here's my situation:
I'm taking a year off college, and currently living in a small town in Maine. I'm working two jobs and (largely) supporting myself. I go back to school this coming September, so I've got a limited amount of time here in Maine.
Now, I just found this on my local Craigslist— a 1965 Plymouth Fury for sale for $2900. Here it is!
I know that the old parental units would be pretty darn furious if I pulled the trigger on this, but it's also pretty darn tempting .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The question I'm posing to you guys is: is it worth it for me to experience the wrath of my parents in return for a sweet cheap vintage ride, or am I better off saving my money and my hide?

uh, how come CalzoneGolem and myself were unaware of another Maine Opponaut? if you are on facebook come find me and tell me what small town we are talking about, and to stay in touch. I thought it was just us 2 and one other guy who is sporadic in posting up here
also, for a plain Jane Fury that is likely just about a fair price for it with the rust and ripped up interior. I would say save your money and your ass.

I like the Fury, but you know what I like more? Two door hardtop Sport Fury.
Get one of those instead. I have a friend with one. Granted his is quite well motivated with a 478CI HEMI, you can rest assured knowing what the car can handle. My friend's is a 1964 as well, I think the front ends look better.

I'm working within a certain budget and a certain radius from where I live, doubt I'd find an 8 liter monster like that near me for less than 3 large— tell your friend he's a lucky bastard!

If you're on the OppositeTalk facebook group, I've just shared the video of it, I can't post it here for some reason. Facebook sucks, blah blah blah. Go check it out. Took several years to build, but now he's happy with it.
I'd stick with whatever you have. A car as torn up as that, like 505 said isn't worth it.

haha I always loved the look of the Vega, but I don't know what to assign to them as far as monetary value due to the problems those had.
My girlfriend is from Bar Harbor, so I am up in your neck of the woods frequently. We were just talking about running out to Isle u Haut this summer odd enough. Stonington is great, I haven't been for years. Are you from out there originally? Go to school in Maine?

Explain to your parents that if you buy that, plastidip the chrome and paint it black, and throw in a 440 out of a motorhome, you could turn around and sell it for $15000 as a resto-mod muscle sedan.

Bar Harbor is beautiful (when it's not summer)! I'm from Brooklyn, NY, but I've been coming up to the island every summer for as long as I can remember. At this point, I like it better than the city. I go to school in Scotland, actually. I know, it's kind of a mess, but I'm enjoying it! If you're ever up nearby, let me know, we'll go for a drink and chat cars!

that is what I do best. My parents are from Queens, and I am from southern CT, but I have been up here 11 years. Just got a retirement house for my parents in New Harbor too, so I will be all up in that area on some yet to be bought boat. Girlfriends family are 5th generation lobster people on MDI. Cool I will certainly stay in touch man. You might be the first Opponaut to see the Invicta wagon driving around in person, since that is up in eastbrook area.

Oh my, this would have been a crappy car when I was in college in the 70's. 40 years later, oh my! We had a 65 dart. Cars from those days lasted about 100k miles and were totally worn out and unsafe. Take it out and stomp on the brakes and guess which direction it darts unsafe. A quarter turn of the wheel with no change in direction unsafe. Ball joints, spring shackles? All shot.
The only good thing about this car is that it will probably be broken in a way you cannot afford to fix before it has the chance to kill you or hurt someone else. You can do far better for $2900.

Ha - Step away from the craigslist!
Probably though it is better maintained and in better shape.
If its cheap transportation you seek, get grampa's 90's buick from some estate sale. It will outperform that fury in every way.

Did you see the bitchin 1974 CJ5 with a V8 and a five-speed? For 2 grand? Because that's what I'm doing, and I'm pretty sure it's not just the marijuana talking. http://maine.craigslist.org/cto/4767620618…
